The kid with the hat is the best part of Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium. He made the character he played believable. Second best was Jason Bateman who played "Mutant". Natalie Portman and Dustin Hoffman were just being themselves. I didn't see them to be anything beyond actors.
There also wasn't as much visual thrill in the movie compared to, say, Willy Wonka, that makes every kid want to visit that place.
As reviewers have said, it's too bad. The movie had a great premise, it just wasn't realized fully.
