Fishing

This is not about the movie again, but about a new method of testing the waters afforded by technology.

Let's say that you have an acquaintance you've drifted apart from. Before it used to be that they'd send you generic quotes or jokes, so that if you don't respond or send anything similar, they can come to their own conclusions about the state of your friendship ("he's just busy", "she's ignoring my texts", "he sent his own quote, he feels the same about me", "she went to the extent of composing a message to say the joke I sent is funny; she still likes me".

That's not enough for some people though. They now have to send you missed calls. If you send a text message in reply, they might think you still believe the relationship can go back to the way it was. They can even say they forgot to lock their phone and it just called you automatically.

I'd believe that, except that the two times it's happened, the night before I was in contact with another close friend of theirs, which they probably heard about...
